You can text an AI agent now

Everyone keeps hearing "AI agent" and then opening another app.
That made sense for a while. Agents lived in dashboards and browser tabs. You went to them when you had a task big enough to justify the switch.
Then products like Poke and Alfred showed a different pattern. You text one number. The agent texts back. No install. No login screen. Just a contact in your phone.
That is the whole idea. The agent is a phone number.
What texting an AI agent actually feels like
You open Messages like you always do. You text a question, a reminder, or a half-formed thought. The agent replies in the same thread.
On iPhone that might show up as iMessage or SMS. On Android it might be RCS or SMS. You do not need to think about the plumbing. If you can text a friend, you can text an agent.
What it can do from your texts
This is the useful middle ground stuff. The things you think of while you are walking, driving, or standing in line.
Reminders. Text "remind me at 5pm to call the dentist" and you get a real text when the time hits. Not a buried notification from an app you forgot to open.
Memory. The agent remembers what you told it last week. Ask about that restaurant recommendation or the name you mentioned once and it can pull it back.
Search. Weather, sports scores, quick facts, translations. Anything you would normally Google in a hurry works as a text.
Calendar. Connect Google Calendar and add events, check your schedule, or get a nudge about what is coming up. All from the same thread.
None of this requires a new interface. Your messages app is the interface.
What it is not great at
Be honest about the limits. Texting an AI agent is not the right tool for deep research, long documents, or serious code work. Those jobs need a full screen and time to iterate.
For quick, in-the-moment help, texting wins. For the bigger stuff, keep your favorite chat app. We wrote more about when each approach makes sense in why use AI Chat SMS over ChatGPT.
